Pierced Figure - Al Landzberg

Pierced Figure is a welded steel sculpture by Peekskill area artist Al Landzberg. Composed of interlocking circular forms and voids, the work explores the balance between mass and space—between what is solid and what is open. Its smooth curves and central apertures invite viewers to look through the sculpture as much as at it, framing the surrounding landscape and architecture in ever-changing ways.

Created in 1977, Pierced Figure reflects Landzberg’s lifelong fascination with geometry, engineering, and the expressive potential of industrial materials. The weathered steel surface adds warmth and depth, grounding the abstract form within Peekskill’s urban and natural textures.

Al Landzberg (1929 – 2020) was a sculptor and engineer whose work bridges art and science. A Brooklyn native, he earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Princeton University and worked in research and development at IBM’s Yorktown Heights laboratory and later helped design IBM East Fishkill’s microelectronics manufacturing processes.  Beginning in the 1970’s he began blacksmithing and eventually steel sculpting mastering ARC, Stick, MIG and TIG welding.

Landzberg’s practice combined precision engineering with lyrical abstraction. Using welded steel, aluminum, and bronze, he created elegant, often curvilinear forms that explore light, balance, and spatial interaction. His sculptures have been exhibited throughout the Hudson Valley, including public installations in New York City, Yonkers, Ossining, Peekskill, and Reston, VA.

Rooted in the language of modernist abstraction, Landzberg’s work continues to resonate in the Hudson Valley landscape—where art and industry share common ground.

Pierced figure was donated to the City Of Peekskill in 2025 by Carol Landzberg Newman and Chuck Newman
